On January 1, 2012, seven months from this week, Washington will effectively ban the sale of conventional 100 watt incandescent light bulbs that Americans have used nearly since the days of Thomas Edison. Instead we will all be required to buy compact fluorescent lights, or CFLs.

Senior Helpers Shares Ideas for Staying in Touch Through Technology

Staying in touch through technology may be easier than you think

The Internet enables users to engage in online shopping and communication with other family members and social groups and reduces isolation and loneliness. Web cams and video technology offer instant virtual communication environments within different areas of a house or in different cities.

Several free or low-cost technological tools, beyond cell phones and medical alert devices, can be especially helpful for seniors trying to stay in touch with family, friends, and caretakers. Loved ones can find some comfort in knowing that their elderly family members have technology available to them. After checking out a few of these technological tools, you will soon become a “Silver Surfer!”

Getting Around the Customer Service Phone Tree!

Few things are more annoying than being stuck in the dreaded Support Phone Maze  - especially this time of year when you just want a new part or some technical advice!

Check out This Popular Mechanics Article for some savvy advice.

My favorite: If you are asked to "press 1 for English" or "2 for Spanish," press "2." The wait for Spanish operators is usually far shorter, and they are almost always bilingual

Need a Computer for a reasonable Price? I have a recommendation for you.

When I find a supplier I love I like to share it with everyone.

This person is at the top of my list: Al King 512-949-8853.

We buy all of our office computers from Al. Found him on Craig's list. Al is in his 50s/60s and refurbishes Dell computers to factory specs and resells them.

He set me up with a Loaded Dell Optiplex 745, monitor (19") , keyboard and mouse for $370. And, he delivered it as well. I've purchased 4 systems from him so far. The only problem we had was a monitor went haywire  -Al replaced it in 30 minutes.

Al needs the business and does great work - give him a call 512-949-8853.

You won't regret it!

Study: Cell Phones May Prevent Brain-Wasting Effects of Alzheimer's

A study in mice suggests using cellphones may help prevent some of the brain-wasting effects of Alzheimer's disease, U.S. researchers said on Wednesday.

After long-term exposure to electromagnetic waves such as those used in cell phones, mice genetically altered to develop Alzheimer's performed as well on memory and thinking skill tests as healthy mice, the researchers wrote in the Journal of Alzheimer's Disease.

The results were a major surprise and open the possibility of developing a noninvasive, drug-free treatment for Alzheimer's, said lead author Gary Arendash of the University of South Florida. He said he had expected cell phone exposure to increase the effects of dementia.

Is Technology Keeping Up with The Needs of Today's Seniors?

 Watch the Interview

Laurie Orlov, the founder and senior analyst of Aging in Place Technology Watch, and the author of our Aging in Place Technology column recently sat down with Jill to discuss what she thought were the major components to the aging in place market—and where she thought our aging boomers would drive the industry as they begin to want and demand the technology and societal structures that mean they can safely stay in their homes.
In Orlov’s opinion there are four main components to the aging in place market:
  1. Communication & Engagement. Staying connected to each other, their families and the outside world.
  2. Home Safety & Security. As individuals become frail they will want products and services which allow them to stay in their home.
  3. Health & Wellness. These boomers will want the technologies that can be used in the home for safety and convenience. Orlov also mentions how the landscape of healthcare will change as telehealth becomes more common.
  4. Contribution & Learning. We will need to figure out ways to help elders stay sharp by ensuring their environment is changing and they can learn something new.
